When You’re Dropping Balls (And Why That’s Okay)

Are you feeling the shift right now?

Maybe you’re heading back to work after a break, or maybe the season is just changing, and suddenly the calendar looks a whole lot fuller. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably spent the last few days staring at your schedule, trying to figure out how exactly you’re supposed to be a great mom, a supportive partner, a dedicated professional, and somehow still have time to, you know, breathe.

It’s a lot.

I was standing in the kitchen the other morning, trying to pack lunches while simultaneously running through an email I needed to send for work, and I just froze. I realized I was trying to hold about six different roles at the exact same time. I felt like a juggler in a circus act, and I was terrified of dropping a ball.

But here’s the thing nobody tells you when you’re trying to do it all: some of those balls are glass, and some of them are plastic.

We act like every single thing on our plate is a glass ball. We think if we drop one—if the house is messy, if we order takeout instead of cooking, if an email waits until tomorrow—the whole thing shatters.

And honey, that is a lie.

The truth is, when you’re juggling multiple roles, especially during a transition like heading back to work, you cannot keep every ball in the air perfectly. It is biologically impossible.

So what actually helps? How do we navigate this without burning out by day three?

It starts with giving yourself radical grace. You don’t have to be perfect at every role today. You just have to figure out which balls are glass right now.

Here’s where I’d start.

First, look at your week and ask yourself: What actually matters right now? The glass balls are usually the people you love and your own well-being. The plastic balls? That’s the perfectly clean house, the elaborate dinner, the pressure to reply to every text immediately. Let the plastic ones bounce for a minute.

Second, lower the bar on the transition. Heading back to work takes a lot of energy. Your nervous system is adjusting to a new rhythm. Give yourself permission to do the bare minimum in other areas while you settle in. Paper plates for dinner? Do it. Saying no to a weekend commitment? Absolutely.

You’re not failing because it feels messy. The messy middle is just part of the process.

We’re all figuring this out as we go. Give yourself a little grace today.

We’ve got this. Together.
